Local Government Websites Can Reach Information to its Citizens |
|
To begin with let us discuss how local governments can use their websites and how it will help them govern more effectively and save them time and money. Government Websites can help in building bridges in communities and make `Govt – General Public Interaction' a lot more frequent, free and meaningful. A website can act as a direct communication link between general public and governing bodies. If a written plan related to any kind of city development is placed online, people with an interest in the plan wouldn’t have to call and take up the time of someone sitting at a government desk. Publishing community related information online is likely increase the amount of people who would actually view the plan, and provide feedback that might be good for the project. Website is such an important tool and yet I wonder why so many times government does not pay much attention to ensure it reaches the public. I’m not sure why it is not happening. I’m also not sure how many people read that ad notice about the bridge or community park being built in their local paper, or read past it since it was placed in the paper as a news story and not as an advertisement. I’m not saying that local government stops publishing public notices. What I want to stress upon is, that the power of this medium be capitalized. The web offers an opportunity for towns to become portals of up-to-date information about what goes on within their communities for residents and people who might be interested in what happens within their boundaries.
