Keyword density Search engine spiders consider keyword density, frequency and proximity part of their search algorithm. Each search engine has a different equation vis-à-vis the density of keywords, their frequency etc based on which they rank websites in order of importance. An important thing to note is that there exists a different level of tolerance in different searches engines regarding degree of density permitted before a site is disqualified or penalized etc. In next three articles, we will check out the difference between keyword density, frequency, prominence and proximity, and how each of them can affect search engine rankings. Keyword density is about the ratio keywords contained within the total number of words within a web page. In other words keyword density is the percentage of occurrence of keywords to the text in the rest of webpage amidst all the other content. It is important for primary keywords/key phrases to have the correct keyword density to rank well in Search Engines. The preferred keyword density ratio varies from search engine to search engine as explained in the beginning of the article. I personally feel that 5% or less keyword density is quite sufficient. In fact sometimes some of the web pages I have worked on have had less than 3% keyword density and yet they draw good number of visitors to the site. So it won’t be an exaggeration to claim that if your page has a very low keyword density, but it's well written and clear, you'll still be able to get as many readers as you would with a more SEO focused article. How to calculate keyword density of a page = Total number of times keyword appears on a web page / total number of words on that page X 100.
