The first step towards optimizing your website is to identify primary and secondary set of keywords or key phrases. Choosing key words and phrases is the most critical step because the rest of your SEO efforts quite depend on it.

Identifying key phrases is a time consuming task and may require you to do some research and use keyword suggestion tools. While deciding the keywords try and weigh search volume against the competitiveness of the key phrases you have short listed. The balance between high volume and low competition will prove to be an ideal selection.

Now use these key phrases everywhere. For example when you save a file to be posted on your website, use your keywords in the file names. Using the keywords between and in the HTML for your web page is critical. You inject life into your keywords or phrase when you place them in your title tag. Use them in Meta tags, anchor text, image alt tags, headlines, and finally in content.

While using keywords consider Keyword Density, Proximity, & Frequency. Overdoing keywords can result in spiders disqualifying your site and pushing it down in search results. So while you are optimizing your own site, make sure you are following the rules properly or you will suffer and will have no one but yourself to blame for this faux pas.
