“How long will it take to get my site optimized?” is a question that webmasters often want to find an answer to. Especially if they are considering hiring a professional SEO to do the job. The truth is that the exact time period cannot be predicted. Although Steps and strategies can be planned in advance.

Some of the criteria that I personally consider before committing a time frame mostly revolves around the size of my client’s website, their competition, their costumer’s psyche and a other real time facts that may exist at the time of carrying out SEO.

If the competition is dense and my client’s ultimate goal is to succeed in cutting through the competition, the SEO strategies I develop and execute are time-consuming and expensive. Long-term link building is also always part of my strategy in such cases. Long term projects are about both - time and money. But the results are definite and there to show and stay.

But for a website with less competition or if the client is interested in targeting costumers geographically (from a particular city for example) the goal can be achieved within shorter time frame and modest budget.

The cost of effective SEO can sometimes be as low as $500 (sometimes even lesser than that)  to $1,000 and it can cost $10,000 a month depending on how niche or competitive the field is.

If you decide to do your own SEO you will still want to chat in SEO forums and read books on this topic before starting. Many of the better print books go quickly out of date, but if you take the effort and ask around there will likely be at least a couple good guides which would be recommended.

Optimization can be carried out on monthly basis or it could be a one time job. It is also fast becoming a specialized field. There are SEOs who call themselves SEO Expert- Industrial, SEO Expert Legal, SEO expert- Local Search and so on. However most SEOs serve clients irrespective of the industry they belong to. And they accept both long and short term assignments.

A SEO after studying your website and digging into your market and competition, proposes strategies along with a time frame within which s/he can complete the assignment. However he can only vaguely predict the time frame within which you can start noticing the results of optimization. Client is generally able to notice some differences within a few weeks. Clients should make sure that they do not have unreasonable expectations. SEO is not an overnight thing or some kind of magic bullet. Its a process that can sometimes take much longer.
