I can think of two major reasons right away why local governments should have web sites. The first reason is that a web site can
become a communication channel for Govt bodies to reach out to people interested in information about their district/ region, including news, events,
and even amendment in local rules related to utility bills, property tax, and other regulations.
The second reason for a district or city to have a web site is because with the help of a website, it will be able to do more with less; less money, less workers, and within less time. As we are aware that most government offices are only open for certain fixed hours a day, and most offices work five days a week, where as a website is always on and available. Target audiences for local government web sites may comprise residents, visitors, potential and present employees, vendors and contractors, business owners, and professionals amongst others. I have done a bit of research and have come up with a list of kinds of information that a local government web site should ideally contain. To my pleasant surprise many of the global sites I visited, offer information and application forms for different types of permits and licenses, making it easy for people and saving them time and energy from having to visit in person for those documents.
They also accept and register complaints online. I also came across several sites that offered ways for citizens to become the eyes and ears of their communities, facilitating as a medium to report broken street lights and traffic lights, missing street signs, potholes, environmental problems, and even criminal activity. Most of the sites though provided news and details about upcoming community events and meetings, and local attractions and landmarks. Some went a step ahead and even offered safety, security, conservation, and environmental tips for residents and businesses. A local government website in my opinion is a very welcome move. A well designed, user friendly, and informative website will help government bodies to run more efficiently and effectively. A local government web site can act as an information hub for business, government, and community development, and employment, and services available to the public.
